Trinity Valley Community College head coach Brad Smiley walked away from Bruce Field with mixed reactions Saturday night.
He was pleased with the way the kids fought but he was not happy with the turnovers and penalties following the second annual Battle In the Valley.
Once all was said and done, the No. 4-ranked Iowa Western Reivers escaped with a 24-17 win over TVCC.
“I am proud of the kids and they played extremely hard,” Smiley said. “That is a good football team over there and I am extremely encouraged by a lot of things that I saw.”
The key drive of the game happened with 3:47 remaining in the ball game.
Freshman Tata Green blasted his way for 79 yards on the ensuing kickoff after Akise Teague gave IWCC the 24-17 lead on a 16-yard touchdown run.
TVCC capitalized on a third and five from the IWCC 16 as Ryan Polite found Green for an 11-yard completion.
The Cardinals had a late penalty that backed them up to the 16-yard line and stalled the drive.
With a fourth and goal situation from the 13 yard line, Polite dropped back for the pass but it was broken up by the Reivers secondary.
Smiley said this year’s battle lived up to the billing.
“It was a great ball game and was a big time battle here in Athens, TX,” Smiley said. “It was unfortunate that we could not get the victory.”
Offensively, Polite was able to connect with 12 different receivers in the game.
Smiley said he was impressed with his team.
“I am proud of a lot of guys,” Smiley said. “Offensively, the backs are running hard and the line did a great job tonight. We stepped up to the plate and played hard.”
