Good one to grow on
Hornets’ 3-2 district opening win is team’s first victory of season
Athens — Athens Head Coach Mark Ingram said two ties in his team’s last two games was a sign that maybe — just maybe — the Hornets were about to break through.
Looks like he knew what he was talking about.
The Hornets scored three first-half goals and held off a hard Chapel Hill (5-7) charge in the final minutes to grab a 3-2 win Friday night at Bruce Field.
The win was not only their first in District 31-4A play, but the first victory of the season for the Hornets (1-6-2).
“We’ve really been moving the ball well on offense, and I think we’re finally playing to our capabilities,” Ingram said.
The Hornets went up 1-0 exactly one minute into the game when Alfredo Vasquez made a nifty move in front of the goal. Macqueus Maldanado sent a pass ahead to Vasquez in the goal box. Vasquez headed the pass, then headed it again into the net just as he collided with Chapel Hill goal keeper Pedro Valdez.
Athens went up 2-0 when a shot on goal bounced off the cross bar and right onto the foot of Jose Romero, who easily tapped the ball into the net at the 17:01 mark in the first half.
Chapel Hill’s Chris Castilleja boomed the first of his two goals with 8:44 to go before half to cut the lead to 2-1, but Athens responded with Maldanado’s bomb from 29 yards away to make it 3-1 with three minutes before half.
Castilleja’s second goal, on a penalty kick with 22:20 left, cut the lead to 3-2. It was the third time in four games the Hornets have given up a goal on a penalty kick.
The Hornets held on despite playing a man down for the final 27:44 after a player was ejected for arguing.
