HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS: AHS tennis team sends five players to regional tournament

VAN — The Athens Hornets and Lady Hornets tennis team had five players finish in the top three at the District 15-3A tournament last Friday and Saturday at Van High School.

This was the final tournament for this district as Athens is headed to Class 4A tennis with Mabank next season.

In girls singles, Jessica Moore finished in first place with a three set win over Canton’s Juliana Bratcher.

Moore won 7-6 (3), 3-6 and 6-2 in the finals.

Moore made it to the finals with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Brownsboro’s Brook Benson and a 6-3, 6-1 win over Canton’s Taylor Tidwell in her first two matches.

In boys doubles, the team of Jake Bywaters and Noah Whitely defeated Wiggins and Nixon from Canton 6-1, 6-0 on Saturday.

They won their first match of Mackelfresh and Riffle from Canton 7-6, 6-3 in their opening match of the tournament.

In mixed doubles, the team of Gross and Young finished in third place with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Rapp and Wilkerson from Mineola.

They won their first match over Mineola’s Melo and White 6-0, 6-2 and lost to Moree and Stroud 6-3, 6-7 and 6-1 in the second round.

In boys singles, Athens Hornet player Johnathan Bywaters finished fifth with an 8-0 win over Mabank’s Viwat Te.

In girls singles, Cesaleigh Monmouth finished sixth with a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Bratcher and a 8-0 loss to Van’s Jennifer Neely.

In boys doubles, the Hornets duo of Hayden Gore and Eldore finished fifth in the tournament.

In boys singles, Brownsboro’s Jon Rhoades advanced to the third round with wins over Brett Blevins from Canton and Mabank’s Te.

In mixed doubles, the team of Castillo and Gomez lost in the opening round to Van’s Moree and Stroud 6-2, 6-0.

The girls doubles team of Fuller and Shaw lost in the opening round to Canton’s Elliott and Erickson 6-0, 6-0 and were eliminated with an 8-0 loss to Contois and Halbert in the consolation round.

The regional tournament is set for April 16-17 in Rockwall with the state tournament set for April 29-30 in Austin.
