AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: AHS senior Anthony Sanders picked for two all-star games

Athens — Athens senior Anthony Sanders has been picked to play in two all-star games before heading off to college in the fall.

He is scheduled to play in the Tyler Azalea Orthopedics All-Star game on April 12 at Wagstaff Gymnasium in Tyler.

He will then play in the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star game in San Antonio in July.

Hole-in-one hit at Echo Creek CC

Mike Mroz hit a hole-in-one at Echo Creek Country Club on March 29.

Mroz hit the shot on No. 4 with a six iron.

Witnessing the shot was Kim Parker and Caroline Mroz.

4 HC area students named all-state

Cross Roads basketball players Kelsi Lookabaugh and Pepper Norwood along with Malakoff’s Georgina Salazar and Jaynie Valero received recognition as academic all-state members by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.

The four seniors had a GPA of 94 or above for grades 9-11.

NJCAA tournament heading to Lubbock

The NJCAA national women's Division I basketball tournament is leaving Salina, Kan. for Lubbock starting in 2016. according to a news release issued Thursday morning by the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce.

The announcement by the NJCAA was made at the organization's annual meeting in Colorado Springs, Colo. Salina had put in a bid to retain the tournament.

Salina still has one year to go with the tournament, which will be March 16-21. 2015. at the Salina Bicentennial Center.
