ATHENS —
The Athens Hornets ninth-grade football team blasted the Mabank Panthers in action last Thursday, 50-30.
Logan Fuller had touchdown runs of five and 35 yards, while Grant Hirsch found the end zone twice on runs of three yards and two yards. Kevin Johnson joined the party with a nine-yard touchdown run. He also returned a punt blocked by Bryce Mayo 28 yards for a score.
Osbaldo Juarez added an 85-yard touchdown run.
Coaches noted the offensive line played a strong game. On defense, Brandon Boyd had an interception.
Junior varsity
Mabank 12, Athens 6
The junior varsity Hornets dropped a nail-biter to Mabank last Thursday.
Dillon Hart scored Athens’ lone touchdown. Other offensive standouts were lineman Paul Prox and receiver Billy Ruth, and defensive standouts were Jeremiah Walker and David Cedillo.
The Hornets will travel to Mineola next Thursday to take on the Yellowjackets. Ninth grade begins at 5 p.m. with JV to follow around 6:30 p.m.
