FRIDAY NIGHT FLASHBACK: Van thumps rival Brownsboro, 70-30

VAN — The Van Vandals showed why they are one of the top teams in District 15-3A Friday night in a 70-30 thumping of the Brownsboro Bears at Van Memorial Stadium.

Van (7-1, 3-0) amassed 537 yards of total offense against the Brownsboro defense, which was yielding 27 points per game.

The Vandals have controlled the series with the Bears for two years running, having won 51-18 in a non-district game last year.

The high-powered Van offense jumped out to a 35-0 lead in the first 13 minutes of the game. Sophomore running back Matt Savis capped a four-play, 65-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Garrett Smallwood then barreled his way in for the two-point conversion and an 8-0 lead with 10:08 remaining in the quarter.

After a touchdown run by Syd Moore and a 60-yard interception return for a touchdown by Aphonso Thomas for the 22-0 lead, Smallwood put the game out of reach with a two-yard touchdown run.

Brownsboro (5-3, 2-1) found a way to get on the scoreboard with six minutes remaining in the opening half when Shelby Rogers barreled his way in from a yard out. The extra point was no good, leaving the Vandals in a 35-6 lead..

Following the ensuing kickoff, Van running back Hunter Hopkins blasted his way to paydirt from 75 untouched yards out. Frankie Grijalva nailed the PAT good with 5:48 remaining in the first half.

Brownsboro then relied on the arm of Rogers on its next drive. Tyler Thomison capped off the pass-happy 60-yard drive with a 20-yard touchdown reception on fourth and five. The Bears went for two but failed as Brock Moore intercepted Rogers with 4:18 remaining in the first half.

In the second half, both teams traded touchdowns. Savis scored his third touchdown of the game from five yards out, followed by a 29-yard pitch and catch from Rogers to receiver Davonte Givens.
