The Athens Review
The Tyler Junior College Apaches scored 30 unanswered points in the second and third quarters to rally past the Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals, 37-16, at Lindale Eagles Stadium Saturday.
The game was scheduled for Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium but was moved to Lindale due to the Texas Rose Festival Parade.
With the loss, Coach Brad Smiley’s Cardinals finished the regular season 3-6 overall and 1-5 in conference play. They are eliminated from playoff contention with one week remaining in the regular season. TVCC is open next week to end the year.
“Obviously the season was not what we felt like it was going to be,” Smiley said. “I just told the guys that I was proud of them and that we were outmanned.”
TVCC snapped a five-game losing streak last week with a 24-9 homecoming win over Blinn.
Smiley was forced to use four different quarterbacks on Saturday as sophomore starter Hunter McCoy suffered a concussion on a 14-yard scamper with 13:28 remaining in the second quarter. He did not return to the game.
In the first quarter, the Cardinals’ defense came up with a big stop on fourth and goal from their four yard line. TJC quarterback Tyrik Rollison rolled to his right but could not find a receiver and was sacked for a 14-yard loss.
The TVCC offense came up with its most impressive drive of the game on its next possession spanning 85 yards in 18 plays. The drive ended with a Saul Martinez 22-yard field goal with 47 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
TJC (5-3, 3-2) answered back on its next drive and never looked back as Rollison connected with Marquise Smith — who went untouched down the right sideline — for a 62-yard touchdown on the opening play of the second quarter.
TVCC went into its bag of tricks in the third quarter as Anterric Maxey handed the ball off to Gary Owens — who then found a wide open Buddy Nunn down the right sideline for a 30-9 deficit with 4:47 remaining.
The Cardinals defense held TJC to 414 total yards of offense and Smiley praised the play of his defense in its final game. The Apaches average a league-best 565.7 yards per game this season.
“I thought our defense played great,”Smiley said. “We are the No. 1 defense in the conference for a reason and we held them in check.”
TVCC attempted to make a game out of it with 8:36 remaining as Owens barreled his way in from a yard out to cut the deficit to 14 points at 30-16. Martinez booted his only PAT good.
On the ensuing kickoff, TJC put the nail in the coffin with a 78-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Lamar Caraway with 8:20 remaining in the game.
“We gave up a kickoff return for a touchdown versus a hands unit which should never happen,” Smiley said. “We gave up a couple of big kickoff returns a couple of times and that is a shame.”
