JUNIOR COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Another sweep

No. 18-ranked Cardinals take care of Blinn Buccaneers, 81-75

Athens — The No. 18 ranked Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals put together a solid win on Wednesday night with an 81-75 win over the Blinn Buccaneers at Cardinal Gym.

With the win, coach Kris Baumann’s Cardinals are now 6-1 on the season and 6-0 in Region XIV conference play. They have won nine straight games.

With the loss, Blinn dropped to 11-3 on the year and 2-3 in Region XIV conference play.

The Cardinals are on the road for their next two contest with a game at Coastal Bend on Saturday and then face the No. 2-ranked Kilgore College Rangers next Wednesday night in Kilgore. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. against Kilgore.

In the first half, the two teams battled back-and-forth as Trinity Valley took a slim 32-26 lead into the locker room.

The Cardinals took their biggest lead of the first half with 3:40 remaining as Josh Robinson was able to score a fast-break layup to give them a 26-21 lead.

In the second half, TVCC was able to extend the lead to double figures as Aldonis Foote picked up an offensive rebound and dunked the ball for a 48-36 lead with 13:10 remaining in the game.

The Cardinals continued to put the pressure on Blinn the remainder of the game before Blinn put together a small run late in the contest.

With just under a minute remaining, Blinn freshman guard Lionheart Leslie drained a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 79-73.

The Cardinals then iced the game with free throws by Dedrick Basile, Ellis and Foote for the 81-75 finale.

Basile led the way for the Cardinals with 17 points, while Foote finished with 11 points in the game.
