AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Athens falls to Van, 47-41, District 15-3A contest

Athens — The Athens Lady Hornets dropped to 0-2 in District 15-3A play with a 47-41 loss to the Van Lady Vandals Tuesday night.

The Lady Hornets (2-15 overall) held a 33-32 lead after three quarters, but were outscored, 15-8, in the final quarter.

Athens was led in scoring by Cari Aguilera with 15 points and nine rebounds, Bryla Barker with six points and 10 rebounds and Leah Lawrence with seven points.

AHS will return home Friday night hosting Mabank. Varsity is scheduled to tip around 6:15 p.m.

BHS takes care of district rival Mineola, 57-55

MINEOLA — The Brownsboro Bearettes improve to 16-6 overall and 2-0 in District 15-3A play with a hard fought 57-55 win over the Mineola LadyJackets Tuesday night.

Brownsboro was led in scoring by Victoria Walker with 19 points and Shelbie Bagby and M.J. Alexander added 11 points each.

BHS will host Van Friday night with the varsity set to tip off at 6 p.m.

Mabank falls to 0-2 with loss to Canton Eaglettes

MABANK — The Mabank Lady Panthers were outscored, 36-5, in the second half as they dropped to 0-2 in District 15-3A play with a 66-20 loss to Canton.

The Lady Panthers were led in scoring by Madison Holyfield with five points.

Mabank will look to pick up their first district win Friday night as they travel to Athens.

Malakoff wins district contest over R.O.L.

RED OAK — The Malakoff Lady Tigers picked up a 58-45 win over district rival Red Oak Life on Tuesday.

Malakoff was led by Hayley Thomas with 14 points and five steals and Kiana Reed with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Malakoff will return to the court Friday night at Dallas Life.

Jacksonville 3, Athens 1

The Athens Hornets lost a tough 3-1 soccer scrimmage to the Jacksonville Indians Tuesday night.

The match was tied at, 1-1, until the final seven minutes of regulation.

The Athens goal was scored by Enrique Rodriguez off an assist from Efrain Hernandez.

Athens will open the 2014 regular season at the Palestine Tournament Jan. 16 against Jacksonville at 9:30 a.m.

ET Twisters forming in Henderson County

The East Texas Twisters are looking for players and coaches to start a new semi-pro football team.

The Twisters are under the direction of coach Jerry Behan.

Behan said he is looking for players age 18-and-up and coaches age 25-and-up.

Behan said he plans to hold practices and tryouts in May or June.

VOLLEYBALL

TGCA Academic All-State

MABANK — Three Mabank Lady Panthers volleyball players were named to the Texas Girls' Coaches Association Academic All-State volleyball team released on Tuesday.

Seniors Mikayla Adams, Kassie Lander and Amanda Spurger made the team after averaging 94 or above grade point average all four years of high school.

The trio were the only players recognized from Henderson County.

 Mabank finished the 2013 volleyball season with a 27-13 overall record and made an appearance in the Class 3A playoffs.
