The Athens Review

Athens — The Athens Aqua-Hornets competed in the North Zone 3A and under meet last weekend.

The Hornets district is mostly made up of 4A schools. This meet was only for teams 3A or smaller.

The UIL does not have a division under 4A so Athens competes against schools like Nacogdoches and Texas High.

The Lady Hornets were led by Allison Hardin finishing first in the 50 free and first in the 100 free.  Paula Contois finished first in the 500 free and second in the 100 butterfly.  Lauren Takata finished first in the 100 back and second in the 50 free.  Avery Weinstein finished first in diving.

Athens teammate Mary Cheadle finished fifth in the 500 free and seventh in the 100 back.

Esther Granillo finished 16th in the 100 back.  The medley relay and 400 free relays made up of Contois, Hardin, Takata, and Cheadle also finished in first.

On the boys side the Hornets were lead by the Alex Garner who finished fourth in the 100 free and fifth in the 50 free. Nathan Garner finished sixth in the 100 breast. Jacob Knight finished 10th in the 100 breast, while Josh Sims finished 12th in the 50 free.

The 200 free relay made up of Alex Garner, Sims, Knight, and Jesse Giles finished seventh.

Athens coach Dewayne Davis said, “I’m not sure we could have done a whole lot better as a team than we did. To a player we dropped time everywhere.  We won seven of the 12 girls events. We lost to three West Texas teams who were simply much bigger than us.  We will get there though.”
