Eustace freshman Hunter Rose running cross country in Australia

EUSTACE — A Eustace freshman will be headed down up this summer to compete in two cross country tournaments in Australia.

Rose will be competing for DownUnder Sports on the United States Cross Country First Team.

“I thinking leaving will be hard but once I get there I will enjoy it a lot,” Rose said. “I think leaving there will be tough because I will enjoy it so much.”

Rose has spent the last two year running cross country and said there was  a reason behind him running.

“I started running cross country in seventh grade because I did not want to play football,” Rose said. “In eighth grade, I really started to like it and I got second at district in eighth grade.”

Rose spent his freshman year at Eustace as a member of the varsity cross country team under head coach Josh Sypert.

The Bulldogs finished first in district and regionals and finished third in state.

He said his interest in the Australia trip came once he saw a letter in the office following the state meet.

Rose said during this trip he will be spending three days in Sydney on the golden coast and then six days in Brisbane.

He said he already has a goal in mind that he would like to run in Australia.

“I am trying to run a 15:30 which would be about a 5:30 mile,” Rose said. “Hopefully, I can get it lower and last year’s winning time was a 14:50 so hopefully I can run faster than that.”

Rose said he reached a goal of $5,000 for the cost of the Australia portion of the trip and he is still raising additional funds.

Rose said he will be focused on working on the middle portion of his race to guide him in his sophomore year at Eustace.

“I want to be improved in running and be able to stay up with the top runners that we have,” Rose said.
