HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL: Athens rallies to beat Mabank, 3-2

ATHENS — The Athens Lady Hornets still have a tough road ahead in their quest to make the state volleyball playoffs.

But they finished the first round of District 15-3A action the right way with a 3-2 win over the Mabank Lady Panthers Friday at AHS Gym.

The Lady Panthers won the first two games over Athens, 25-21 and 25-20. Head coach Liz Ramsey’s Lady Hornets then rallied back to win the final three games and the match by scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 15-13.

The win left the Lady Hornets with a 2-3 record in district and 13-15  mark overall.

Athens will open the second half of district play Tuesday at Mineola. Next Friday, the Lady Hornets will host their annual “Dig Pink” match at home against Canton. Varsity action is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.

Dig Pink is an annual event held by volleyball teams at all levels to raise funds for breast cancer research.
