TYLER — The Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals were overdue.
The Cardinals, ranked No. 9 in the country, overcame a horrible start to beat the Tyler Junior College Apaches (2-2) Saturday at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium, 35-28.
TVCC (4-0) spotted Tyler a 14-0 lead and turned the ball over on each of its first four possessions before rallying to win. The teams combined to turn the ball over 10 times — including nine times in the first half alone.
It was the first win for the Cardinals at Rose Stadium since Oct. 25, 1997 -- the year TVCC won its last football national championship. TVCC beat Tyler that day, 37-6.
The Cardinals scored 28 unanswered points after falling behind by two touchdowns, then watched Tyler rally back to tie the game in the fourth quarter. TVCC quarterback Tucker Carter scored the game-winning touchdown on a one-yard run with 5:03 left in the game.
Carter is now 5-0 as a starter at TVCC dating back to last season. He also threw for a pair of scores, as did backup Deric Davis. Davis' score went to James Jackson from 15 yards out in the third quarter, and Vedial Johnson added a 70-yard touchdown run.
