HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Regular season thriller

AHS fights hard, comes up short with 14-12 loss to Mabank

Athens — The Athens Lady Hornets fought until the very last out Tuesday night for their one and only senior, pitcher Hannah Windham.

But in the end, the Mabank Lady Panther ended their year with a 5-5 district record and spoiled senior night. 14-12, at Peg Cain Field.

First year coach  Jamie Poteete’s Lady Hornets finished the season with a record of 11-15 overall and 1-9 in District 15-3A play.

The Lady Hornets were knocked out of playoff contention last week.

Pending the outcome of the Brownsboro and Van contest, the Lady Panthers have a chance at securing the No. 3 seed in the district.

The Lady Panthers led, 14-2 after the fourth inning as Mabank put up 10 runs on nine hits in the inning.

MHS had two RBI’s from Hazel Puempel, Jess Vess, Gaona and Lander in the inning.

Morgan Gaona led off the inning with a single, followed by singles from Taryn Pool and Kassie Lander to load the bases.

Puempel then smacked a double scoring Gaona and Pool for the 6-2 lead.

Following a strikeout to Gabi Corder, Vess smacked a bases clearing single off Windham.

The Lady Hornets tried to battle back scoring 10 runs in the final three innings off Puempel and Lander but the comeback was not enough.

The biggest inning for the Lady Hornets came in the fifth inning as AHS scored five runs to close the inning.

The Lady Hornets had RBI’s from Durden, Windham, Krystle Davis, Madison Womble and Carson Sikes in the inning.

Sikes RBI single drove in Hadley Cain to cut the lead in half to 14-7.

In the sixth inning, Davis reached base with a single, followed by an RBI double from Red. She later scored on a wild pitch.

Womble then reached with a walk and Sikes drove her in with an RBI double for the 14-11 deficit.

In the final inning, Davis smacked an RBI single scoring Durden from second base.

Durden went 3-for-4 with one RBI and four runs scored. Windham finished her career going 3-for-4 with four RBI for Athens.
