HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER: Historic run

Mabank ousted in regional semifinals by Wylie, 5-1

CARROLLTON — The Mabank Lady Panthers dealt with adversity towards the tail end of the season but finished out with a record breaking season.

The Wylie Lady Pirates knocked out the Lady Panthers, 5-1, in the regional semifinals Saturday afternoon at Standridge Stadium on the campus of Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD.

“Wylie is a good team so give them credit,” Mabank coach Matt Lemoine said. “They are well coached and we knew that coming in.”

With the loss, coach Matt Lemoine’s Lady Panthers finished with a record of 23-3-3 as the District 31-4A champions.

“Every game in the playoffs is going to be hard and we are a 3A team playing against 4A schools,” Lemoine said. “I am very proud of my girls because we have done something that no one else has done in school history before.”

Wylie opened up the scoring in the first half with Addie Ault’s crossing shot past a diving Bailey Swain with 30:32 remaining in the first half.

The Lady Pirates took a 2-0 lead into the locker room as Ruth Blackburn placed a perfect ball past Swain for the 2-0 lead with 12:37 remaining in the first half.

In the second half, Wylie look to have put the game away as Casey Gray went top shelf on Swain with 27:10 remaining for the 3-0 lead.

Mabank’s Savannah Henderson would not be denied scoring her 76th goal of the year on a header off a corner kick with 22:45 remaining for the 3-1 deficit.

“We will miss her next year but we have some young girls with some freshman and a big 8th grade group coming up,” Lemoine said. “Hopefully we can get back after it next year.”

Wylie then put the game out of reach with 17:42 remaining as Casey Mize blasted a shot past Swain.

She was able to get a hand on the ball but could not get it past the goal for the save.

Ault then capped the scoring at, 5-1, as she broke through the Lady Panthers defense on a breakaway attempt and nailed the shot past the left post with 16:23 remaining in the game.
