Trinidad outguns GC, 99-68
GREENVILLE — When Greenville Christian scored on their first play from scrimmage, they set the tone for a high scoring game.
It looked more like a basketball score when the dust settled: Trinidad 99, Greenville Christian 68.
Those who saw the game Saturday afternoon, saw Trinidad score its highest total ever. The previous high for Trinidad was back in 1997 in a second round playoff game against Strawn. The Trojans scored 94 in that contest.
The Trojans were consistent throughout the game, scoring 26 in the first quarter, 31 in the second, 20 in the third, and 22 in the fourth. Greenville Christian scored 50 points in the first half, but the Trojans shut down the Eagles to 18 points in the second half.
Offensively, the Trojans had several stars on Saturday. Senior Marcus Allen led the way with 308 yards rushing on 25 carries with seven touchdowns. He was also 10 for 17 passing for 266 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. Darius Boggas had a career day receiving as he hauled in seven catches for 186 yards and four touchdowns.
Senior quarterback Tyler Sapp was very efficient, as he threw four times, completing all four, three of those tosses for touchdowns. Fabian Ayala also added a touchdown reception, as well as tacking on 14 more points in extra points. Senior Jonathan Crocker also scored a touchdown on a toss from Sapp. Senior Zayd Mahasneh also had two grabs for 65 yards, setting up two scores inside the 10 yard line. When it was all said and done, the Trojans amassed 690 yards of total offense and 14 touchdowns.
Defensively, the Trojans struggled in the first half. GCS showed why they are the two time defending state champions in TAPPS. They were virtually unstoppable until the Trojans made some adjustments defensively at half time. The second half was a different story as senior Damarken Crawford and junior Brandon Pearl started applying a lot of pressure up front, leaving Allen and Boggas opportunities to pick off three passes.
The Trojans are off this week. They travel to Covington next Friday, Sept. 18, for a 7:30 ball game. The week after that, Trinidad returns for a three-game home stand.
Come see the Trojans, as they fight for their 6th consecutive district championship this year.
Trinidad Junior High plays its first game of the season at home this Thursday, September 10, at 6 p.m. They play Leverett’s Chapel.
A big day, even for Six-Man football
Check out these numbers from Trinidad’s game at Greenville Christian, where even the final score (99-68) was staggering:
• 690 total offensive yards by Trinidad
• 14 touchdowns
• 99 points, most ever in school history
• 574 total yards, 10 touchdowns by senior Marcus Allen (308 rushing yards)
