SALINA, Kan. — TVCC Interim Head Coach Elena Lovato was just presented with the Region XIV Conference Coach of the Year plaque during opening ceremonies of the NJCAA Women's National Basketball Tournament.
Lovato is 7-0 as TVCC's interim head coach since last month.
The ceremonies, which officially open the tournament, come after four games have already been completed. All has gone according to plan in those games, with the exception of the No. 10 seed, Monroe (N.Y.) Community College, which upset seventh-seeded Northern Idaho today, 63-58.
In other games, No. 1 Jefferson County (Mo.) beat No. 16 Williston (N.D.), 77-56; No. 2 Gulf Coast (Fla.) easily handled No. 15 South Georgia Technical College, 79-53; and No. 3 Midland (Texas) College beat No. 14 Shelton State (Ala.), 75-62.
The eighth-seeded Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals (28-5) open their tournament at 8:15 p.m. against Walters State (Tenn.), which sports a 25-2 record.
Prior to TVCC's game, Northern Oklahoma, the sixth seed, will take on Labette (Kan.)
Two more first round games are set for Wednesday: No. 5 Copiah-Lincoln (Miss.) will battle with No. 12 Casper (Wyo.) College; and No. 4 Central Arizona -- the defending NJCAA women's national champion -- will meet No. 13 Lincoln Trail (Ill.)
