ATHENS — The Athens Lady Hornets are going where no team before them has gone before.
To the playoffs.
The Lady Hornets (4-5 in District 31-4A) locked up a postseason slot with a 3-0 win over the Eustace Lady Bulldogs (1-8) Tuesday night at Bruce Field.
“This is so cool. I’ve been waiting for this,” Lady Hornets Head Coach Dedra Jackson said.
The Lady Hornets got on the board 21 minutes into the match when Samantha Harris found the back of the net to give her team a 1-0 lead.
Anna Allen, one of 13 seniors honored on Senior Night, got a foot on a deflected header off a corner kick from fellow senior Priscilla Brannon to push the lead to 2-0 13 minutes later.
The score remained 2-0 through halftime, until Brielle Patton scored her first varsity goal with 11:27 left in the match.
Goalkeeper Daisy Martinez then made a nice save with just under five minutes to go to preserve the shutout.
The Lady Hornets close out the regular season Friday at Mabank. The match is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
The playoffs will begin late next week.
“Last year I was on a team with a lot of seniors,” Allen said. “They were really ambitious to make the playoffs, but we didn’t make it. It’s amazing that this group of seniors it taking this team to the playoffs.”
