1/8/14 East Texas Fishing Report

Athens — Here is the East Texas Fishing Report for the week of Jan. 8:

ATHENS — Water level about six inches low; surface temp in the 40s.

Bass are fair to 13.76 pounds on deep cranks fished around underwater grass beds. Also a few fish reported on 'Traps and  shaky heads. No report on crappie.

CEDAR CREEK — Water level is 3.59 feet low and stained. Water temp in the 40s.

Fishing guide Jason Barber says catfishing has been fair to good around cormorant roosts and stump fields in skinny water using cut shad and punch bait. Drifting over deep water also has been productive for some quality size blue cat.

Hybrids and white bass hitting shad pattern plastics dead—sticked around schools of fish in deep water.

PALESTINE — Water level is about six inches high and stained up north, clearer down south. Water temp in the 40s.

Fishing guide Ricky Vandergriff says bass fishing has been fair on jigs fished tight to wood in Kickapoo Creek. Deeper timber and sloughs in the Old Folks area also giving up some fish on jigs. Crappie fishermen reporting limits at the Highway 155 crossing using jigs and shiners in 24 feet of water. Catfish are fair on jugs and trot lines. Cormorant roosts also holding blues to 10 pounds. White bass are slow.

RICHLAND CHAMBERS — Water level is 7.28 feet low and fairly clear. Water temp in the 40s.

 Catfish are hitting cut bait and punch bait under cormorant roosts and along windy shorelines. Jug liners also picking up some quality fish. Bass fishing has been slow; not much traffic on the lake since the front. No report on white bass.

FORK — Water level is 4.72 feet low and stained up north, clear towards the main lake. Water temp in the 40s.

Tony Parker at the Minnow Bucket says bass fishing has been slow. A few fish reported on Alabama rigs fished around bridge crossings and roadbeds. Crappie fishing is fair in 40 feet of water on live shiners soaked four cranks off bottom. No report on catfish.

NACOGDOCHES — Water level about six inches low and stained up north, clear down south. Water temp in the 40s.

Bass fishing has been slow. A few fish hitting moving baits over the grass, but the bite has been slow overall. Crappie anglers reporting a few keepers off deep brush.

TOLEDO BEND — Water temp is 3.49 feet low and stained. Water temp in the 40s.

Fishing guide Stephen Johnston says crappie fishing is picking up at the Chicken Coop. Yellow bass and catfish are mixed in, suspended at 25—35 feet. Bass fishing has been slow.
