AMATEUR ADULT BASEBALL: Local athletes moving on to play collegiate baseball at Cedar Valley

Athens — “Art Of The Game Baseball Organization”, sponsor of the Athens Redbirds baseball team announces placement of three players on 2014 collegiate rosters.

Redbird manager Mike Samuels made arrangements for Mike Jeffcoat, head coach of Texas Wesleyan University, and Carlos Ramirez, assistant baseball coach of Cedar Valley Community College to observe and evaluate three players from the Athens Redbirds.

The Redbirds Baseball team is a Henderson County Amateur adult baseball team that provides an opportunity for local junior college students to continue working on baseball even if attending a school that does not have a baseball program.  All three of the students who were able to participate in the evaluation are TVCC students.

Pitchers Marcell Ross and Jeff Gandara, and catcher John Velez have each been extended an opportunity to attend Cedar Valley Community College in Dallas and participate on the school’s baseball team.

Samuels said, “I am really proud of these young men. They have worked hard to have an opportunity to continue with baseball beyond High School and into a college program. Not all kids can afford to go off to school and hope to walk on at a program.”

“We offer, through participation in Redbird Baseball, an opportunity to prepare for a college tryout.” Samuels continued, “I really want to thank local attorney James Owen and Jimmy Wyrick at Athens Lumber for supporting this program and helping me create an opportunity for these young people. I also want to thank ATBA (Athens Teenage Baseball Association) for allowing us to practice and play on one of their fields.  They have been very accommodating.”

The goal of “Art of the Game Baseball Organization” is to help talented college-eligible players develop and find a place on a collegiate roster.

Redbird Baseball is open to any college-eligible athlete. Requirements are:  Players must have college eligibility remaining; must maintain an amateur status; and be 18 years of age or older.

If interested in participating in the baseball program, you may contact Samuels for a player evaluation.

Redbird Baseball picks up players year round so interested players are welcome to come out any time.

“We obviously have some pitching and catching openings as a result of these guys moving on, so come on out,”  said Samuels.

For more information, please contact Samuels at 903-203-7321 or Owen at 903-681-6487.
