AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: AHS thumps Royse City, 77-55, remains undefeated

WILLS POINT — The Athens Hornets improved to 9-0 on the year with a big win over Royse City in the opening round of the Wills Point Tournament on Thursday.

The Hornets were scheduled to play Edgewood on Friday in the winner’s bracket.

Athens senior Anthony Sanders continued his hot start to the season as he scored 30 of his 41 points in the first half on Thursday. He also had six assists, seven steals and hit five three-pointers in the game.

Ryan Jefferson finished with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Courtland Lyons and Kynden Crist added seven points each.

Josh Garrett led the teams in rebounds with 13 and added two points for the Hornets.

2013 Athens Review All-HC football team

The 2013 version of the Athens Daily Review All-Henderson County football team is set to be released in the Dec. 26 edition of the Review.

The team will feature student athletes from all eight county football teams across the area.

Mabank adding boys basketball game

The Mabank Panthers have added a boys tripleheader basketball game Tuesday night at Mabank.

The Panthers will take on the Dallas Thunder starting at 6:15 p.m. with the junior varsity in the auxillary gym.

The freshman will play at 7:30 in the auxiliary gym.

The varsity will wrap up the action at 8 p.m. in the main gym.

TVCC webcast/radio set for 2013-2014

The Cardinal Sports Network and KCKL have announced the webcast/broadcast schedule for the 2013-14 basketball season.

TVCC finishes 2013 season at No. 5

The Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals capped off a bowl game season with a top 5 finish in the final NJCAA poll of the season.

The Cardinals won the Heart of Texas Bowl, 72-23 over the Mesa Community College Thunderbirds on Dec. 7 in Copperas Cove.

The Cardinals went 10-2 on the season.
