JACKSONVILLE — Jacksonville College picked the wrong homecoming opponent.

The Trinity Valley Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams put a damper on the celebration Saturday afternoon, rolling to a pair of Region XIV Conference victories at Curtis Carroll Fieldhouse.

In the men’s game, TVCC was a 68-56 winner. The TVCC women won in 74-60 fashion.

Both team teams are scheduled to be at home Wednesday against Blinn College. The women’s game tips off at 5:30 p.m.

MEN

The Cardinals were in control throughout the game, using full-court pressure and a trapping defense to set up quick scores.

TVCC led by as much as 11 in the first half and was up 35-29 at the half. The Cardinals scored the first six points of the second half to again move into a double-digit advantage.

Jacksonville pulled within two, 45-43, with 10:42 left, but the Cardinals went on a 13-3 run to put the game away.

Cavel Witter and Jonathan Clark were TVCC’s top guns with 19 points each. Marlin Cloudy had 10, including a pair of three-pointers.

Jamaria Johnson netted nine points and Dannon Wafer eight.

TVCC was 20 of 26 from the free throw line. Jacksonville was 16 of 29.

The win improved the Cardinals to 15-7 on the year and kept them in third place in the conference at 10-4. Jacksonville dropped to 13-9 and 6-9.

TVCC swept the Jaguars this season, having won 67-55 in the first meeting at Cardinal Gym in December.

WOMEN

The Lady Cardinals built a 40-17 halftime lead and were in command the rest of the way.

TVCC was up by 20, 61-41, with 8:34 to go in the game when the Lady Jaguars went on a run to get within 10, 68-58.

Diane Barnes had the hot hand for the Lady Cardinals with 25 points. Ashley Walker tossed in 16 and Darika Hill had 15. Ashley Crawford finished with eight.

The Lady Cardinals were 14 of 24 from the free throw line. Jacksonville was 13 of 17.

TVCC upped its season record to 19-6. The Lady Cardinals, who have won seven straight, are 10-3 in conference play. Jacksonville fell to 8-15 and 0-12.

The Lady Cardinals were a 91-61 winner over Jacksonville at Cardinal Gym in December.
