Brownsboro falls 41-16

BROWNSBORO — The Van Vandals used the power running of Jermie Calhoun and the passing attack of Brady Pennington to blister the Brownsboro Bears 41-16 in a District 14-AAA opener.

Van raised its mark to 5-1 on the season, while the Bears fell to 4-2 on the year.

Brownsboro is scheduled to travel to Chapel Hill next week. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.

Brownsboro had things going their way in the first quarter. Tyler Smith kicked a 23-yard field goal to give the Bears a 3-0 lead after holding the Vandals to three three-and-out possessions.

But it didn’t take long after that to get the Calhoun train rolling. The senior tailback, who finished with 208 yards on 32 carries, helped move Van to the Brownsboro two. Pennington took it in from there.

Zack Bailey and Ryan Epperson hooked up on the Bears’ next drive to find the paydirt from 45 yards away with a strike down the middle. The kick failed, giving Brownsboro its second lead of the night, 9-3.

Calhoun showed off his skills once again on a reverse around the left side speeding 36 yards to the end zone.

The Vandals picked off three more Bailey passes in the second half and turned them into points.

Calhoun scored from three yards out with 9:45 to go in the third quarter. Pennington had the other two scores from two and 12 yards out respectively.

Bailey and Epperson teamed up once again in the third quarter for an eight- yard touchdown strike.
