AHS sweeps past Crockett

Lady Hornet volleyball team keeps playoff hopes alive

Special to the Review

CROCKETT — Athens’ Lady Hornets traveled early Saturday morning to Crockett to play a volleyball game that was postponed due to the homecoming festivities at Crockett on Friday night.

It proved to be a good Saturday morning for all three AHS teams. The Lady Hornets won on all three levels.

The Lady Hornet varsity had to go five games before prevailing. AHS dominated the second and third games, winning 25-10 and 25-12. The decisive fifth game was a 15-12 win for the Lady Hornets.

“This ends the first half (of district) for us with a 2-3 district record,” Lady Hornet coach Tosha Spain said. “This win keeps us alive for the playoff race in the second half.

“The sub-varsity teams did very well, too. I am proud of our kids program-wide right now.”

In Game 5, it began as a back-and-forth affair until the 6-6 mark, when Delaney Herrington had four straight service aces and made the score 10-6. Crockett came clawing back with a three spot of their own.

With the Lady Hornets up 13-11, sophomore Kayla Stanley got a service point. Then at 14-12, Kandyce Tull hit one serve for game point.

“The girls played hard,” Spain said. “I think winning this game gives us some momentum for the second half. We are not going away. We will be in it ’til the end.”

In the sub-varsity contests, the JV Lady Hornets beat Crockett in two straight, 25-15 and 25-23. The Lady Hornets are 2-3 in district.

The freshman team kept its undefeated district record alive with a two-straight win, 25-10 and 25-11. The Lady Hornets are 5-0 in district and 17-1 overall.

The Lady Hornets travel to Brownsboro Tuesday night to begin the second half of district play. Action begins at 5 p.m.
