Mineola edges Eustace, 7-6

Teams trade second-quarter touchdowns, play stingy defense rest of way

MINEOLA — Not a lot of scoring. Plenty of defense.

And another close loss for Eustace.

The Bulldogs got a 1-yard run from quarterback Chris Compton but fell short in their bid to overcome the Mineola Yellowjackets Friday night, 7-6.

Mineola’s only score of the game also came in the second quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run. The difference, however, was that the ’Jackets’ PAT was true, while Eustace’s try — following a 1-yard Compton run — failed.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 2-4 on the season and 0-1 in District 14-AAA. Mineola improved to 4-2 and 1-0.

The rushing duo of Shawn Baldwin and Trevon Johnson again turned in a solid night. Baldwin rushed 19 times for 79 yards while Johnson ran 10 times for 60 yards. The Bulldogs’ offensive line paved the way for a 216-yard rushing night overall.

Eustace fumbled twice, losing one, while Mineola four times and lost three.

The Bulldogs return to action next week as they host Canton in search of their first district win. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
