Mildred mauls Malakoff, 35-0

Special to the Review

MALAKOFF — The Mildred Eagles flew into Malakoff Friday night and took off with a District 14-AA win, 35-0.

The game was the district opener for both squads. Mildred improved to 3-2, 1-0 with the win, while Malakoff fell to 0-5, 0-1.

The Tigers started hot, moving into Eagle territory on the first drive of the game when Bernard Hall hit Nick Simione in the flat. Simione rumbled 47 yards all the way to the Mildred 28.

Two plays later the Tigers fumbled away the ball, but on the next play the Eagles returned the favor with Jackson Blacketer making the recovery for Malakoff. The Tigers could not convert on the opportunity, however, and turned the ball over on downs.

After an exchange of punts, the Eagles started rolling and put together a nine-play drive covering 67 yards. Mildred quarterback Thomas McDonald finally cracked the scoreboard early in the second quarter on a five-yard run.

The Tigers’ next possession again looked promising as Malakoff moved into Mildred territory, but again a fumble ended the drive. For the second time in the game, the Tiger defense was able to immediately get the ball back when Cornelius Richardson intercepted a McDonald pass.

The Tiger offense couldn't seem to get any traction, however, and punted again.

Mildred hit its groove on the next series, going 53 yards with McDonald hooking up with running back Dang Nguyen for a 38-yard touchdown. Trevor Owen converted the extra point, as he did after each touchdown, to send the teams into the locker room with Mildred holding a 14-0 lead.

The Eagles added three touchdowns in the second half for the final score: A Nguyen 3-yard run; a McDonald 60-yard run; and a Kevin Dozier 2-yard run.

McDonald led the Eagles with 181 yards.

Malakoff was paced by Justin Thomas with 45 yards.

The Tigers are scheduled to travel Friday to Rice. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
