Cards romp to 2-0 start

TVCC has easy time with Louisiana College JV, 51-14

From Staff Reports

ALEXANDRIA, La. - The Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals scored 27 points in the first quarter Thursday night and put it in cruise control en route to a 51-14 non-conference win over Louisiana College JV.

The win raised second-year coach Brad Smiley’s TVCC squad to 2-0. The Cardinals are coming off back-to-back 2-7 seasons.

The stakes get higher for the Cardinals in their next outing. TVCC is scheduled to travel to Miami, Okla., to face Northeastern Oklahoma in its SWJCFC opener Saturday, Sept. 20.

TVCC’s big first quarter was fueled by a pair of Louisiana College JV turnovers. The Cardinals cashed a fumbled recovery on the game’s second play into a nine-yard scoring pass from Pat Cook to John Turner. Nestor Varona kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Cook went on top to find Darnell Williams for a 15-yard scoring connection the next time the Cardinals at the ball. The PAT was blocked.

William Pittman capped the next TVCC drive on a one-yard scoring plunge. Varona added the PAT for a 21-0 lead.

After a Derric Stephens fumble recovery, Cook put his third touchdown pass on the scoreboard with a 24-yard strike to Chris Young.

Varona added a 26-yard field goal midway through the second quarter for a 30-0 lead.

TVCC led 37-7 at the half after Jonathon Blackshire picked off deflected pass and raced 60 yards for a touchdown.

Bo Walker scored on a 40-yard run for TVCC in the third quarter and Tyler Little passed 49 yards to Young to close the Cardinal scoring.

Louisiana College JV scored on the final play of the game to account for the 51-14 final.
