Caraway, Gaddy take title

Annual WGA-sponsored event draws full field of 49 teams

Donna Caraway and Janet Gaddy teamed up for a four-stroke win in the Championship Flight of the annual Lady Pea Picker golf tournament at Athens Country Club.

A full field of 49 teams teed it up Saturday and Sunday in the Women’s Golf Association-sponsored event, making it the largest in years.

Caraway and Gaddy shot a 63 in the opening round and closed with a 61 for a 124 to get past the team of Connie Watson and Lori Daniel for the title. Watson-Daniel had a 63 in the opening round and shot a 65 in the final round.

Debbie Godwin and Pat Johnson nabbed third in the top flight, finishing a shot back of the Watson-Daniel tandem by a single shot.

In the First Flight, Cindy Spier and Deborah Rounsavall cared a 140 for an eight-shot win over the team of Carla Carpenter and Susan Tompson. Barbara Perry and Linda Potts were third with a 144.

Kama Bozeman and Terry Pruitt won the Second Flight with a 146. Janet Richison and Mary Margaret Wright were second with a 149 and Amy Gould and Pam Monroe third.

Daphne Fryer and Linda Turner came out on top in the Third Flight with a 150. Donna Isabell and Ronna Adams were three strokes back and Alicia Harris and Yvette Pinner finished third with a 154.

The Fourth Flight title went to the team of Betty Johnson and Gina Haidinyak with a 157. Carol Ann Stringer and Martha Hunt finished second with a 164 and Mary Lynn Smith and Shirley Ward were third with a 166.

The tournament was highlighted by a hole-in-one Sunday on the 120-yard 14th hole by Ann Connelly of the Dallas Athletic Club. Witnessing the ace were Mona Frame, Pam Monroe and Amy Gould.
