Xtreme drop finale, 30-6

Special to the Review

BROWNSBORO — The Texas Xtreme dropped a 30-6 decision to the Port City Jaguars in their season finale Saturday night at Bear Stadium.

The Xtreme suffered their first losing season in seven years after having made the playoffs in each of the past six seasons. The Henderson County-based Texas United Football League team has made one championship game appearance and reached the semfinals four times.

Port City is the 2007 defending TUFL champion, 2008 East Division champion and the No. 1-seeded team in the 20-team TUFL Northern Conference.

With only 17 players in uniform, Xtreme played well the first half and were down 9-6 at halftime. Due to fatigue, the Xtreme players simply wore down the second half.

Six Xtreme players played the entire game offensively and defensively and all 17 players saw action on both sides of the ball.

Brandon Thompson started the game at quarterback for the Xtreme, but was ineffective due to an injury received two weeks ago. Thompson left the game near the end of the first half after re-aggravating his injury. Defensive strong safety Brandon Lyons then took over the quarterback position in the second half and played well until leaving the game in the fourth quarter with an injury.

Lyons was the most effective of the four quarterbacks that played in the game, completing 3-of-4 passes for 75 yards. He rushed for 34 yards on five carries.

Amos Berryman also contributed on offense the second half with two receptions for 45 yards and 24 rushing yards on four carries.

Xtreme owners and coaches Gary Craig and Larry Anding were proud of the two-way performance of Lyons and Berryman, who are the two smallest players on the team.

Other offensive standouts were Jerry Martin, Ben Swain, Kerry Yarbrough, Flem Kindle, Eric Williams and Mike Spencer.

Defensive standouts were Brandon Lyons, returning one of his two interceptions for a 90-yard touchdown, four passes defended, one sack and four tackles; Jason Anding with three sacks, five tackles and two passes defended; Berryman with an interception, three passes defended and five tackles; Kerry Yarbrough two sacks and five tackles; Flem Kindle four tackles and one pass defended; Jimmy Roberts with four tackles and two passes defended;, Evan Womack two passes defended and three tackles; and Jerry Martin with four tackles.
