CANTON — The Athens Lady Hornets posted a second-place finish in the Edgewood Invitational Golf Tournament Monday at Van Zandt Country Club.

Coach Tracy Carter’s AHS squad shot a 478 for the runner-up finish. Canton ran away with the title with a 407.

Junior Bethany McElhany was the top finisher for the AHS girls. She was 10th with a 114.

Ashley Darby, also a junior, carded a 116, followed by freshman Sam Harris with a 123 and junior Shaun Julian and Caitlin McClenny with a 125 each.

Varsity Girls finished second as a team competing against 11 other teams.

The AHS boys finished sixth in the 16-team competition with a 337.

Host Edgewood took first with a 316. Grace Community netted second with a 318, Canton third with a 321, Mount Vernon fourth with a 326 and Bullard fifth with a 327.

Senior Lance Boyce fired an 80 to finish seventh for AHS. Junior Payne Floyd had an 85, Mark Lay an 86, Trevor Forrester an 86 and Tyler Yarbrough a 91.

The next action for the AHS teams is the first round of district Monday at Van Zandt Country Club.
