FAIRFIELD — A 3-1 record gave the Athens Hornets first place in their pool in the Fairfield Invitational Baseball Tournament over the weekend.

Coach Tony Sikes’ Hornets are scheduled to action Tuesday at home against Sulphur Springs. Action begins at 6:30 p.m.

The Hornets opened the tournament with a 12-5 loss to China Springs. It was a tough afternoon for the Hornet outfielders with winds gusting 30-plus MPH.

“The ball played all kinds of tricks out there, but if we get a glove on it, we should catch it,” Sikes said.

The Hornets beat Mabank 3-2 in a nine-inning game ended with a suicide squeeze bunt by Hunter Choate to bring in Sammy Ramirez.

“We hit the ball hard the entire game, but I give Mabank credit for making all the plays,” Sikes said.

Choate got the win on the mound after coming in for Jack Barkley, who pitched into the sixth inning.

“Jack pitched a great game, striking out 10 and allowing only three hits,” Sikes said. “I was extremely proud of they way he competed on the mound.”

Friday, the Hornets beat Anna 18-2 in a shortened four-inning.

“It was the total opposite of the Mabank game, everything we hit found a hole,” Sikes said.

Coty Willett picked up his third win of the season, pitching a complete game.

The Hornets were a 9-2 winner over Fairfield’s “B” team Saturday morning.

“It really didn't help us to play them at all, but they were on the schedule so we fulfilled our end of the deal,” Sikes said.

The Fairfield runs were score in the Eagles’ final at-bat on a couple of AHS errors.

Kyle Jones picked up the win in his first outing of the year.

“The best part of the tournament was watching our kids compete on the mound,” Sikes said. “It was also nice to see our bats start to come around. We've pretty much set the top of the lineup, but the bottom is wide open and could change game to game depending on who is pitching.”
