SULPHUR SPRINGS — The Athens Lady Hornet junior varsity softball team played in the Sulphur Springs Spring Fling softball tournament held March 8 and 10, taking the consolation title.

Athens had a rough day on Thursday by losing all three games to some tough softball teams.

Freshman Delaney Herrington pitched all three games and did well.

“I am proud of these kids, especially Delaney,” AHS softball coach Gary Qualls said. “She gives everything she has on every pitch. She is a very special athlete in our program.”

After going 0-3 the Lady Hornets returned on Saturday to redeem themselves by going 1-1, losing to Mount Vernon and beating Royse City for the consolation trophy.

“These kids are young, but really great to coach,” Qualls said. “We have a strong future in the softball program with these girls. They hit the ball well and we are developing some pitching”.

The Lady Hornets are 7-3 on the year.
