I’m writing in regards to the letter from Don Ricks about Mr. Cooper.

First, let me say I am not for drinking and driving — period! I do think the sentence handed down to Mr. Cooper was way to harsh. True enough, he made a very bad mistake as all of us have at one time or another but I know how very sorry Mr. Cooper is and wishes it had never happened. I see no reason for ruining another life over one mistake when I know of several people that have had four and five DWI’s and are still walking around free. All I’m saying is fair is fair. If they were trying to make an example of him, it won’t work. As long as there is alcohol there will be people who drink and drive. I do understand Mr. Ricks attitude towards this. If it were my family I’d probably feel the same way. Knowing Mr. Cooper as I do, I think justice would have been served with probation.

Animals are so like people, and can be used to teach us

I still hold that fascination. It is just so incredibly difficult to understand how someone can do something horrible to another, that ends the other’s life, or maybe even worse.

The residents of Gun Barrel City and their neighbors are now going to drink until 2 a.m. on weekends, if they so choose.
And they have so chosen with last Saturday's election, which extends drinking hours in some establishments in that community.

May 17, 2007: a day in Henderson County like no other

Most of Henderson County was coming to the end of the business day. The Athens Daily Review Friday edition was just about finished. The stories had been written, and the front page design was taking shape.
