MAIL CALL: I was ‘appalled’ by mail with ‘outright lies’
Malakoff — To my fellow Kaufman and Henderson County residents,
I was appalled to open my mailbox, and find a piece of mail from State Representative Betty Brown filled with outright lies about Lance Gooden and his family.
I can vouch for Lance personally. He is truly one of us. Having been his 7th grade teacher before moving to Malakoff, I was filled with pride when he walked across the stage as the class Valedictorian of Terrell High School.
Lance is a product of our community. When Betty Brown accuses Lance of being an outsider, she is insulting me and every teacher who played a part in his education, every coach who worked with him on the field, every pastor and Sunday school teacher who nurtured him spiritually, and every friend or neighbor who watched him grow up into a successful businessman right before our eyes.
If Betty Brown were tuned in to this community, she would know how instrumental the Gooden family has been, and how we are all keeping them in our prayers as Lance’s father, Coach Tom Ed Gooden, is bravely battling cancer at M.D. Anderson. To attack the Goodens during this time is truly one of the most hateful, un-Christian acts I have ever seen. It proves that Betty Brown will say anything in order to maintain her political power, even if it is hurtful to hundreds of people in our community.
I hope the voters will reject this kind of gutter politics this year, and join me in supporting our native son, Lance Gooden.

What a person needs to do at FM 1616 is not rocket science
Over the past several weeks there have been a couple of wrecks at the Farm-to-Market 1616 and Loop 7 intersection. I just don’t understand it. How can you have a wreck at an intersection that is plenty wide, with warning signs all around it?

Father’s Day reflects the honor of being a Dad
I want to put a little different spin on what Father’s Day is about for me. Normally when we think of Father’s Day, people think of it as the day we honor our Dads. This is true, and Dad’s do deserve recognition, some more than others. But we won’t get into that.

For Father’s Day: The Papa Joe Legacy
How do you describe a man that has touched so many lives? Is he a great man? I think not, because when I look around this room, I would have to say that he is a legacy.

For now, we’re holding the Father’s Day gifts
Dad has never been big on Father’s Day presents. For the last few years, he’d always announce a couple of weeks before the date that my sister Sharon and I should save our money.

Discipline is what many people dread
There is a word that has been rolling over and over in my brain for the past couple of weeks. It’s one of those words that I don’t really like, and to be honest, haven’t been very good at. It’s a word I have thought of from time to time, and a word that I try to live by on occasion (but really never do).

Ellard invites everyone to the lodge
It was a long week at the lodge......last week. But everything was real good. Poor Betty Meeks just seemed to be slowin’ down and runnin’ out of juice. She told Froggy that things were getting tough around there.
