James Richard Ogburn

Athens —

James Richard Ogburn, Sr. passed away January 14, 2013 at the age of 80 in Houston, Texas.  He was born October 23, 1932 to Richard and Oleta Reeves Ogburn in Brinkley, Arkansas.

Following graduation from high school in Mt. Holly, Arkansas, he attended the University of Tulsa, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and was chapter president of Kappa Alpha fraternity.  After graduation he worked in Kansas City as a stockbroker and then joined IBM Corporation.  He spent his career with IBM in Tulsa, St. Louis, New York/White Plains and Austin.  He was involved with marketing and support of mainframe IBM computers early in his career, and was promoted to Senior Planner in Austin, where he helped bring together marketers, engineers and executives to develop the first IBM home computers.  He retired from IBM in 1990 after 35 years of service.

His retirement was spent remodeling houses, working in his workshop and traveling.  He especially enjoyed taking cruises with his wife and family.  The highlight of his travels was a two week cruise to Spain, Italy, Turkey, Malta and Egypt, where he fulfilled his lifelong dream to see the Pyramids.  A friendly, outgoing person, he especially enjoyed the annual 4th of July celebration at his son’s home on Lake Athens.  He loved vintage cars and was always ready for a car show, whether it was in Scottsdale, Arizona or Dallas, Texas.

He was a past member of the Lions Club and was a Boy Scout leader while his sons were in scouting.  He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Ridgefield, Connecticut.  He served in the U.S. Air Force.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Phyllis; children Jim Ogburn, Jr., M.D., and wife Maria of Athens, Texas; Joel Ogburn and wife Lisa of Manvel, Texas; grandchildren William and Zachary of Athens, Texas and Lauren of Manvel, Texas; sisters Martha Watson and Dot Lewis and husband Pat of Mt. Holly, Arkansas; brother Ralph of Pueblo West, Colorado, plus numerous nieces and nephews and other family members.

Per his wishes he was creamated.  Also per his wishes, his ashes will be spread in the Gulf so, as he put it, “I can continue my travels all over the world.”

If desired, remembrances may be made to the charity of your choice or to the Henderson Count Humane Society, P.O. Box 162, Athens, Texas 75751, to honor his love of animals.
