Athens —
Ray Dean Sell, known to many as “Pete” or “Big Ray,” 54, was born Jan. 11, 1958 to the late Alton and Betty Sell in Gatesville. On Dec. 3, 2012, Ray went home to join his Lord and Savior.
Graveside services were held Dec. 5, 2012 in Bullard at Bullard Memorial Cemetery (Boren-Connor Funeral Home).
Ray and his family moved to Athens in 1985, which he remained for several years. The oilfield is where he loved to be when it was good, and in steel construction when it wasn’t.
Of course, he loved getting his hands dirty, and skinning his knuckles beneath the hood of a car just as much.
Several summers, he helped coach Little League baseball teams.
People knew him as always smiling and always ready to lend a helping hand. His greatest love, however, belonged to his sons Ray, Jr. and Matthew.
Ray is survived by his wife of one year, Stephanie; son Ray Dean Sell, Jr. and wife Melinda of Athens, son Matthew Allen Sell, and wife Chelsey of Nederland; seven grandsons; one granddaughter; and his twin sister, Chessie Faye.
“Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.”
