Athens — ATHENS-Services for Iris Meazell Thornton, 79, Athens are scheduled for 2 p.m., Thursday at Liberty Missionary Baptist Church, 424 Gun Barrel Lane North, Gun Barrel City, with the Rev. Dennis Wood and the Rev. Mack Swain officiating.

Burial will follow in Athens Cemetery under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.

Mrs. Thornton died Nov. 26, 2012 in Athens.

She was born April 18, 1933 in Henderson County to the late William Alfred and Sarah Jane Bauman Meazell, and had been a resident of the county most of her life.  She was a retired seamstress, and was a member of New Testament Holiness Church in Grand Saline.

She was preceded in death by her husband James Clinton Thornton, daughter, Karen Jane Meredith and brothers Lamar, Eugene, Travis, Phillip and Wiliford Meazell.

Survivors include a daughter Gail Higginbotham and husband Larry, Mabank, grandchildren Phillip Higginbotham, San Antonio, Donny Fleenor, Midlothian, Shane Cox, Christopher Cox, both of Frankston and 13 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will include Phillip Higginbotham, Donny Fleenor, Shane Cox, Billy Cox, Christopher Cox and Paul Cox.

Visitation for family and friends will be 1 p.m., until service time at the church.
