Athens —
2/06/53 – 11/24/12
A celebration of Scott’s life will be held Friday, Nov. 30, at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church of Athens, 900 Robbins Road with the Rev. Bill Hauck officiating. A reception and lunch will follow.
Scott was the son of Ross and Joyce Forney of Dallas, born in South Korea on Feb. 6, 1953. His mother, Joyce Forney, brother, Doug Forney and sisters, Priscilla Cunningham, Kathryn Sargent and Ellen Gardner survive him.
Scott graduated from Plano High School, and from Richland Community College in Dallas. He was close to completion of his Bachelors degree in Horticulture at Texas A & M, when, already a husband and a father, he decided to go to work in Athens. He never regretted that choice. Athens has always been the best place in the world for Scott.
Married to Debra Chilton, Scott had dreams of a greenhouse business of his own. Together, they accomplished that with “Scott’s Nursery.” They were doing fine, until he was hit with a brain hemorrhage that changed everything. Through the rough times to follow, it was his faith, his family and the prayers of members of the First Christian Church, and other churches in Athens, which helped him survive, and gave him the hope of better times to come.
Scott and Debra reared two children: Dylan, who lives in Murchison; and Jessica (married to Jason Tischer) who lives in Dallas. Both graduated from Athens-area high schools. Scott was very proud of his grandchildren, Blake Forney and Abigail and Andrew Tischer.
Scott’s many contributions to Athens include his membership in the Athens Jaycees. He was the guy who set off the gigantic fireworks display for some years at Bruce Field. He was a contributor to several garden clubs, and published a book on gardening, especially for that geographical area.
When the East Texas Arboretum moved to its present location, he was actively-involved, and became their official horticulturist.
Boy Scouts occupied much of Scott’s time. At one point, he was leader for two troops at once. Cub Scout troop No. 350 and Boy Scout Troop No. 343 developed the kind of Scouts who had an unusual number of Eagle Scout awards.
In his church, Scott was enthusiastic about giving through his talents at landscaping, and through membership in the choir.
Instead of flowers, the family would hope for memorial contributions to be made to the Music Ministry or the Landscaping Fund of First Christian Church of Athens, 900 Robbins Road, Athens, TX 75751.
