Athens —
LARUE-Mary J. Singleton, 83, went to be with the Lord Oct. 7, 2012.
Mary was born May 27, 1929 in Woodville to Robert Morris and Annie Effie Smith Johnson. Her family lived in Woodville until 1938, and then moved to Kirbyville. She graduated Kirbyville High School in 1948, then moved to Longview to attend VMI Business School graduating in 1949.
After graduation she moved to Houston to work for Second National Bank as secretary to the Vice President and Trust Officer until 1953. She soon took a position in the Exploration Department of Humble Oil and Refining, which is now Exxon USA. Mary retired from Exxon USA after 33 years of service.
On March 15, 1958 Mary married J. Boyd “Lucky” Singleton at First Baptist Church in Kirbyville. They lived in Houston for many years, and attended Second Baptist Church until moving to LaRue upon retirement in 1988.
Mary’s life was spent serving the Lord. She enjoyed working in the library and ladies ministry at First Baptist Church in Athens. Her work extended beyond church, and reached into her community where she lived. Mary was known to her family as selfless. Her heart was to love, to take care of those in need, and put others first. We celebrate her life, and are thankful for the many years she was with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Ruth Erlene Johnson.
Mary is survived by siblings Jackie Evans (Mrs. Don L. Evans, Jr.), Elaine Bryan, William Andrew (W.A.) Johnson and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. Mary had many dear friends that were really her dear sisters in Christ.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012 at First Baptist Church, 105 South Carroll St. with Dr. Kyle Henderson and Dr. Bill Pemberton officiating.
Entombment will follow on Wednesday at Memorial Oaks Mausoleum in Houston.
Visitation for family and friends will be 1 p.m. until service time at the church.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to First Baptist Church Library, 105 S. Carroll St., Athens, TX 75751.
