Shannon Francis

Athens — ATHENS – Memorial services for Shannon Francis, 79, will be held on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Athens with Dr. Joe Warren officiating.

Mr. Francis passed away Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012 in Paris, Texas.

Born on Sept. 15, 1933 in Dallas, Shannon was the son of John Darrell Francis and Elizabeth Jordan Francis.

Shannon married Sue Biggs on June 5, 1954 in St. Louis, Mo.  He joined the Army, and proudly served his country in Korea.  He was actively involved with the Boy Scouts.  He was a member of Troop 35 as a boy, and attended the World Jamboree in Paris, France.  He later became an Eagle Scout, and a Troop Leader in the Dallas area.

Shannon and Sue moved to Athens in 1982 after falling in love with the community during a business trip for his advertising company which did work for First National Bank, The Spanish Trace Inn and numerous other local establishments.

They opened Waldenwood Gifts and Accessories in Athens, and he became a very involved community leader for many years.

He was a member of the original group that started the Black Eyed Pea Jamboree, and continued doing the advertising for many years.  He instigated the “Concert on The Square” at noon, as well as the Athens Antiques Affair at the Cain Center, which were both popular events for the citizens of Athens.

He was a member of the Central Business Association, later to serve as President, which is responsible for the brick work, as well as many of the lamp posts’ and decorations still displayed today on the Square in Athens.  He designed the logo that is currently used by the City of Athens on its vehicles, publications and the water tower.

Shannon was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman, and spent countless hours in his beloved Bass Pro Shop.  Shannon and Sue loved to travel, and made it a point to visit Branson many times.

Mr. Francis  was preceded in death by his parents; Darrell and Elizabeth Francis and his brother; Foster Francis.

He is survived by loving wife of 58 years, Sue of Athens, his son Bob Francis and wife Joan of Jacksonville,  daughter Molly Francis Foster of Athens, two brothers; Ray Francis and wife Margie of Dallas, Rob Francis and wife Mary Ann of Dallas, a sister Dr. Martha Francis and husband Chuck McCarter of Dallas, two grandchildren; April Burke, Andrew Francis and wife Kristi and two great-grandchildren; Bella and Layla Francis.
