David Michael (Mike) Stover

Athens — ATHENS- Life’s journey on earth for David Michael (Mike) Stover ended on Nov. 12, 2013 at The Hospice of East Texas in Tyler after a long battle with cancer.

Services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 15, 2013 at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Perry Smith officiating.

Mr. Stover was born May 25, 1947 in Athens to Porter and Glenna Stover. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was a lifelong resident of Athens, and graduated from Athens High School in 1965, Henderson County Junior College in 1967, and continued his studies at North Texas University with a major in insurance and finance.

Mr. Stover was a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. He had been in the insurance business since 1968, and established the Mike Stover Agency in 1973. Mr. Stover was a member of Athens Kiwanis with 34 years of perfect attendance, and served as Director 28 years, past President and the recipient of the distinguished President citation, George F. Hixon Fellowship and Kiwanis Legion of Honor Award, past president of the C. T. Bush Kiwanis Foundation.

Mr. Stover served on numerous committees, including Henderson County YMCA, Henderson County Cancer Society, Athens Planning and Zoning Commission, Athens Teenage Baseball Association, and was currently serving as President of Athens Municipal Water Authority.  He was a 32nd-degree member of Athens Masonic Lodge No. 165 for 38 years. He served as Master of Lodge twice. He was instrumental in the construction of the new Lodge Building. He received the Golden Trowel Award, and was appointed to the post of District Masonic Relations, District Deputy Grand Master for Masonic District No. 17.

Mr. Stover was an avid TVCC fan and received the Cardinal Ambassador award in 2009. He was a dedicated supporter of the Athens High School Hornets, Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and sharing time with friends and family.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Chris Stover and grandparents.

He is survived by: his loving wife Sue Foster Stover; children Angie Marquez and husband Manuel, Athens, Brad Stover and fiancé Kelly, Burleson; grandsons Matthew, Daniel and Eric Marquez; great-grandchildren Paris, Jake and Parker; step-grandsons Keith and Paul Marquez; step-great-grandchildren Kadence, Reese, Abby and Alexis; and beloved dogs Raven and Rex.

Pallbearers will be Roy Harris, Kelly Harris, Johnny Shelton, Bobby Meazell, Adam Davis and Tres Winn.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of Athens Noon Kiwanis Club, Athens Masonic Lodge No. 165 and Athens Municipal Water Authority Board Members.

Visitation for family and friends will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.
