Athens —
Bill Wittner, 71, beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully Oct. 1 at home in Athens, surrounded by his family.
Born March 31, 1941 in Austin, Bill was the only child of the late Nobert “Nick” and Weta (Haevischer) Wittner. He graduated from McCallum High School in 1959, and from the University of Texas - Austin in 1964, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Bill began his career at Cooper-Bessemer in Mt Vernon, Ohio, where he met and married his wife Nancy (Lepley) Wittner, with whom he happily spent 45 years.
Bill was a founder and the president of Minneapolis-Moline Engine Company in Russellville, Ark., where he and his family resided from 1980 to 1995. He retired in the year 2000 from the Paragon Engineering Company in Houston.
Genealogy was Bill’s lifelong passion, and he published several detailed family histories. As a result of his research and work, many lasting friendships were developed, including many relatives residing in the Wittners’ native Germany. In earlier years, he spent many hours with his family sailing on Lake Travis in Austin, and Lake Ouachita in Arkansas. After moving to Athens, Bill developed a love of the Ford Model A, and enjoyed restoring and touring in his two Model A cars. He was very active in the Cedar Creek Model A Club, and held several offices, including president of the club.
He is survived by his wife Nancy; son Douglas Allan Wittner and partner Gaile McGregor of Portland, Ore.; daughter Kristina Louise (Wittner) McClure and husband Matthew of Fort Worth; several nieces and nephews; and many cousins in the Brenham area. Bill is also survived by his mother-in-law Mary (Rinehart) Lepley of Mt Vernon, Ohio.
Visitation for family and friends will be 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral Home.
A private family burial will be at 2 p.m., Friday in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Industry, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association, 4100 Alpha Road-Suite 100, Dallas, TX 75244.
The family wishes to thank the caring nursing staff at ETMC in Athens, and the staff of the Hospice Of East Texas for their compassionate care.
