Ada Laverne Batt

ATHENS — ATHENS-A memorial celebration for the life of Ada LaVerne Batt, 87, Athens, is planned for Sunday, June 9, 2013 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Society in the Women’s Building.

Mrs. Batt’s cremains will be entrusted to Athens Cemetery Columbarium.

She passed away April 7, 2013 in Athens.

She was born July 16, 1925 in Henderson County near New Walton to the late Ollie and Eula Mae Weaver McClelen. After graduation from Athens High School in 1942, Ada worked at Parkland Hospital in Dallas for a short time, which instilled a nursing career that would later have a 25-year tenure.

Following her brief period in Dallas, Ada moved to Sausalito, Calif., and was actively employed in the war effort as “ Rosie the Riveter” in the ship yards. She met and married Eugene George Batt in 1945. They moved to Milwaukee, Wis. in 1947, where she served 25 years as a nurse’s aide at Milwaukee Psychiatric Hospital, retiring in 1991. Upon retiring, Ada moved to Athens to be near her native Texas ancestry. Mrs. Batt was a member of the United Methodist Church and was an avid gardener.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by: an infant son, Kevin George Batt; brothers Robert Junior McClelen, Howard Gene McClelen; sisters Glaris Oleta Dixon, Lena Rue McClelen, Juanita Ruth McClelen, Jesse Leota Walker and Elizabeth Wynell Gunnels.

Survivors include sons Michael Eugene Batt, Plano, David Batt and wife Debra, Kewaskum, Wis.; daughters Regina Fluker and husband Glenn, Athens, Patricia Kay Batt, Tyler; grandchildren Glenn Earl Fluker, III and wife Alice, San Antonio, Edward Alexander Fluker, West New York, N.J., Anton Michael Batt, Princeton, Roger Lee Batt, Plano, Angela Laverne Veal and husband Wesley, Princeton, Cyndi Sonnenburg, Appleton, Wis., Kristin Marie Meharry and husband Gerald, Flint, Jamie Lynn Terry, Manitowac, Wis.; 17 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Mary Batt and June Lenz, both of Wisconsin.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Doug Curran and his staff, South Place Nursing Center staff, East Texas Medical Center, Athens and Crystal Ream for the love and care provided to our mother during her final illness.
