Charlie Oliver Jackson, Jr.

Athens — Athens – Funeral services for Charlie Jackson Jr., 89, of Athens, will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, May 8, 2014 at the Fellowship Baptist Church in Athens with Bro. Mike Dean, Bro. Olin Boles and Bro. Mark Morton officiating.  Interment will follow at the New York Cemetery in New York, Texas.

Mr. Jackson went to be with the Lord on May 04, 2014 in his home surrounded by his loving family with the singing of hymns and reading of scripture.

Charlie Oliver Jackson, Jr. (known as Brother C.O. or Brother Charlie) was born on March 5, 1925 in Corsicana, Texas, to Charlie Jackson, Sr. and Lila Ramsey Jackson. He spent his early years in the LaRue and New York communities before his family moved to Tyler, Texas where he attended high school. The day he turned 18, he volunteered for military service in WWII in 1943. He flew 65 missions as a radio operator and waist gunner in a B-26 over Europe. On his last mission, his plane crashed and he served his last months in the service recuperating from his injuries.

After the service, he worked to achieve an education. He attended Tyler Junior College, and University of Houston Law School, before surrendering to the ministry at First Baptist Houston, Texas.  He graduated from East Texas Baptist College (University), and attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He continued his interest in history and theological education through reading, studying, and teaching.

In June 1953, he married the love of his life, Nancy Hanes Jackson of Mount Pleasant, Texas, and together they had six children (three sons and three daughters).

He pastored several churches in Texas. He moved to Athens, Texas to pastor Fellowship Baptist Church for approximately 12 years. In 1990, he felt the call to go to Las Vegas, Nevada as a church planter where he and his wife were used by God to establish the First Baptist Church of the Lakes. While there he was active in the state convention and taught extension courses at Golden Gate Seminary. They then retired in 2002 and returned to Athens, Texas, which they considered home. He has stayed busy over the last 12 years writing, teaching, conducting revivals, and supplying in pulpits.

He believed that “A man’s life preaches his funeral,” and made this statement often.  He was instrumental in missionaries surrendering their lives to go to numerous countries and in men and women entering into the ministry.  He ministered with his words and actions and demonstrated an exemplary testimony even into the last days of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his children, David Royce Jackson, and Lila Faith Daley Henderson, and his sister Adelaide Jackson Milner.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy, his children Elizabeth Joy Sparks and her husband Paul, John Daniel Jackson and his wife Terri, Lydia Hope Morton and her husband Mark, and his son Charlie Mark Jackson. They have 16 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren – his grandsons are serving as pallbearers. He is also survived by his brother Grady Royce Jackson, numerous nieces and nephews and extended family members.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 7, 2014 from 6-8:00 P.M. at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home in Athens, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fellowship Baptist Church, Athens, Texas; The Hospice of East Texas / Palliative Care Services / HomePlace in gratitude of their support and services in our loved one’s last few days; or any charity of your choice.
