ATHENS-Graveside services for Thomas Harold “Tommy” Downing, 77, Athens, is scheduled for 10 a.m., Thursday in Athens Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. C. William McNatt officiating.
Tommy was received into the loving arms of his Savior Monday afternoon at his home.
He was born Sept. 30, 1936 in Mabank to the late Samuel David and Hettie Estelle Meyer Downing. Tommy was formerly the band director at Mabank and Kemp high schools, Athens Junior High, Athens High School and Henderson County Junior College (TVCC). He was band clinician and past president of Texas Community College Band Director’s Association.
Tommy was Chief of Henderson County Juvenile Probation upon his retirement in 1998. He was well loved and respected by his colleagues and dedicated his life to working with youth.
Tommy is preceded in death by his brothers A. J., Adolph, Sam, Joe and sister Mary.
Survivors include: his wife of 54 years, Mamie, Athens; son Tommy and wife Donna, Abilene; daughter Jennie Peterson and husband Greg, Moorpark, Calif.; grandchildren Jonathan Downing and wife Tess, Reston, Va., Charles Downing, Falls Church,Va., Victoria Peterson and husband Jayce, Moorpark, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation for family and friends will be 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m., Wednesday at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.
