ATHENS – Memorial services for Gary Jaffa, 63, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the East Texas Arboretum in Athens.
Mr. Jaffa passed away Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012 in Athens.
Born on Sept. 20, 1949 in Houston, Gary was the son of Sam Jaffa and Geneva Borders Jaffa.
He attended De Soto High School, where he lettered in football and basketball. He was a graduate of SMU, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and History. While at SMU, Gary served as a proud member of and athletic trainer for the 1972 SWC Co-Champion Basketball team. He also earned an Associate degree in Horticulture from TVCC in 2005.
Gary excelled in a number of careers. He worked for the Dallas Independent School District, where he was a teacher, coach and athletic trainer. He had over 20 years of sales and management experience, working for such companies as Parker Garrick, The Dallas Showroom, Keith Smith, LTD and the Jaffa Company.
Gary loved sports, antiques, gardening, music, people, politics and conversation. He moved to Athens in 1993, where he became active in church, did volunteer work, continued coaching and became a member of the Master Gardener’s Club of Athens. Gary was very active in AA for over 10 years, where he made friends, and made a deep impact.
Gary was preceded in death by his father in 1988. He is survived by his mother, Geneva Jaffa of Athens, daughters Sarah Jaffa of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Molly Jaffa, also of Brooklyn, N.Y., brother Rick Jaffa of Pacific Palisades, Calif., sister-in-law Amanda Jaffa, nephew Joe Jaffa, niece Frances Jaffa, and uncles Jack, Murray and Carl Borders.
