Eugene “Gene” Benjamin Darby, Jr.

MALAKOFF — Eugene Benjamin Darby, Jr. passed peacefully from this life to begin his eternal journey on May 9, 2013.

Gene was born in Amarillo on Jan. 23, 1928 to Eugene Benjamin Darby, Sr. and Rosemary June. His family then moved to Pharr, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley where he lived until 1962, when he and his family moved to Houston, Australia, Athens and Nashville. He graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1950, where he was the Captain of the A&M Golf Team. He was extremely proud of his Aggie legacy. His Dad graduated from A&M in 1925 and his son would go on to graduate from A&M in 1975. He wore his Aggie ring always, and would not remove it for any reason.  His grandfather, Henry Norton June was the Dean of Architecture at A&M, and was instrumental in the original design of Kyle Field. Gene was very proud to show anyone his name on the plaque at the stadium.

On June 27, 1947, Gene married the love of his life, Maxine Wood. They were together over 65 years until her passing in January of this year.  They lived an exciting and adventurous life traveling the world, and were deeply in love until the last days together in the nursing home.

Gene Darby was a man with many interests during his life.  He was an airplane pilot, and even owned and flew a helicopter. He was an avid golfer and extremely competitive. He loved bird watching and growing all types of plants, indoor and outdoor. One of his greatest joys was being outside, no matter the temperature, and preferred wearing shorts to long pants. He loved skiing, water and snow.  He was a sports fan, and loved to go to the live games, baseball, golf, basketball and football.  His family was the benefactor of his love to go, and they got to experience life close-up and personal, and a chance to see the world.

He loved God, and was deeply saddened when he could no longer attend church services, but his faith remained strong and steadfast.  He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a sister June Ingram.

Survivors include his three children and their spouses: Tere and Don Lawyer of Athens; Brian and Jennifer Darby of Denver, Colo.; and Ken and Kathleen Darby of Nashville, Tenn.

Grandchildren: Peyton (Jenny) Williford; Whitney (Britt) Morris; Rosemary (Brian) Stunkel; Amber (Michael) Budronis; Ashton Dziedzic; Christopher Darby.

Great-grandchildren: Cade, Reid, Audrey, Sydney Williford; Ford, Darby, Charlie Morris; Jake Budronis.

And a host of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Darby willed his body to science so a private family memorial will honor his life with no public service.  He would want you to remember him with a gift to a charity or church dear to your heart.

The family wishes to offer their deepest gratitude to the staff of Green Oaks Nursing Home and Bristol Hospice (Lighted Pathways) for their loving care of our parents for the past several years.
