Athens —
Loving Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Daughter, Sister, Aunt and Friend.
Our beloved Margaret Gayle Duncan Ammerman left this earthly life, surely going on to a sweeter, better place with her Lord, on Dec. 16, 2012. Born March 9, 1938 in Princeton, W.Va., to Mary Alma Bailey Duncan and William Ernest Duncan, Gayle lived a simple rural life as a child. She attended Garden Elementary School and Athens High School.
As a girl, and always throughout her life, she loved nature and spent much time in the forests and gardens with a keen knowledge and love of plants and animals. She loved traveling with her children and grandchildren, taking them on fun excursions, and cooking wonderful meals, including her famous "peppered steak with brandy cream sauce." Gayle knew to enjoy each treasured moment of life, and bring all who knew her joy.
In her young adult life, Gayle worked for Bill Bassford, Attorney at Law in Jacksonville, Fla. It was there she met and married William Eugene Ammerman. Gayle took on the raising of Bill’s children, Tommy and Cheryl Ammerman, and soon gave birth to Tony Ammerman. Leesa Ammerman also came to live with them after her high school years.
Gayle was a wonderful housewife and dedicated mother. After 27 years, she found herself living on her own at Cedar Creek Lake near Mabank in 1985.
She began a new life as the owner and operator of a "country cookin'" restaurant, The Feed Box, a popular gathering place for friends and members of the lake community. In these years, Gayle blossomed into a real philanthropist, entrepreneur and civic leader. From the restaurant, she helped feed the needy and elderly nearby, and helped many persons in need to have work.
She was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and also participated in the inspired work of a program she felt so vital, Teen Court, where young people learned about the consequences of their actions and choices.
She worked diligently for Rotary International in various capacities and was President of her chapter. This outstanding organization allowed her and her fellow Rotarians to raise monies for various charities, and to produce gala fundraisers, and deeply enjoy her friends and community.
The notable contributions Gayle Ammerman made in her life to her Family, Friends, and Community would be far too long to write. In a word, Gayle was “true.” Gayle was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, niece, cousin, aunt, great-aunt and dear friend and respected community leader.
A memorial celebration will be held on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 11 a.m. in the banquet room of Vetoni’s restaurant, located at 428 S. Gun Barrel Lane. This celebration and memorial service welcomes all friends and persons who knew, and were touched by the humanity and love of Gayle Ammerman.
Memorial contributions are welcome in her name to the scholarship fund of the Rotary Club of Cedar Creek Texas, P.O. Box 1658, Mabank, TX 75147. A memorial service will also be planned in Princeton, W.Va. in March, 2013.
The family would like to extend a special and heartfelt thank you to all of the good friends that Gayle cherished and enjoyed in the Cedar Creek Lake area.
“I love you more…” - Gayle
