George Melvin Bonner

Athens — Funeral services for George Melvin Bonner, 78, passed away Nov. 27, 2013, in Athens.  He was born on June 8, 1935, in Troup to William and Ethel (Calicutt) Bonner. 

Melvin grew up in Eustace.  He graduated from Eustace High School in 1953. After high school, he attended Dallas Business School, where he received a certificate in Business Management. 

He joined the U.S. Army in 1955, and served for three years. He served in Japan as a stenographer, and was the recipient of numerous awards.  He was honorably-discharged in 1957, achieving the rank of Sergeant. 

He began work for the Federal Reserve Bank in Dallas as a manager where he worked for four years.  He worked for International Harvester in Dallas as warehouse/maintenance personnel for 34 years.  In addition, Melvin continuously worked with his parents on their farm, and selling produce they raised until their deaths.  He retired in 1997 at the age of 62. 

Melvin married in 1958 to Jean Ann Green in Dallas.  They were happily married for 55 years.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Eustace, United Auto Workers Union, and once served as a Eustace Independent School District board member. 

He enjoyed a great many outdoor activities including meeting with old friends at the local coffee shop or café.

However, Melvin enjoyed helping and serving his family the most.  He was always there when his family needed him. 

Melvin was preceded in death by: his parents, William and Ethel Bonner; and brother, Larry Bonner. 

Melvin is survived by: his spouse Jean; sons Wesley Bonner and his wife Dena and Randy Bonner and his wife Jean; brothers, Billy Bonner and his wife Jo and Charlie Bonner and his wife Margret all of Eustace;  eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and his many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Family visitation will be held at Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home in Mabank on Nov. 29, 2013, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, in the Eubank Cedar Creek Chapel with the Rev. Scot Bonner officiating. Interment will follow in the Payne Cemetery in Eustace. 

Pallbearers will be Shane Renberg, Russell Budai, Derek Bonner, Julian Bonner, Jude Bonner and Karl Rushing.
