Athens —
Martha Ann Pickens Sharpe passed away peacefully at her home on Sept. 23, 2012 in Austin, surrounded by her loving family.
Martha Ann was born in Athens on March 1, 1926, the only child of Florence Luker Pickens and Albert Pickens, members of two pioneer Henderson County families.
She moved with her parents to Tyler in 1941, and graduated from Tyler High School in 1943. She graduated in 1946 from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority.
In 1948, she married Tom Sharpe of Nacogdoches. In 1950, they moved to Athens. They were involved in several businesses in Henderson and Kaufman counties. They were active in civic affairs, and especially the First United Methodist Church, where they served on the board at various times, and were faithful members through the years.
She served on the zoning board of the Athens City Council, and was a charter member of the Athens City Cemetery Board of Directors. She was an active supporter of her children’s activities in school and church all through their school years. Being part of the Thursday Bridge Club with her close friends also brought her many, many years of enjoyment.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and by Tom in 1985. In 2005, she moved to Austin to be near family.
She is survived by their four sons: Tom Sharpe, Jr. and Stacy, Santa Fe, N.M.; Dan Sharpe, Austin; Stephen and Jane Sharpe, Austin; Michael and Beverly Sharpe, Dallas; and five granddaughters: Rebecca and husband Michael Baker, Dallas; Maggie and Carmen, Albuquerque; Tori, Dallas; and Ava, Austin.
Other survivors include cousins Carol Noble Price of Fair Oaks Ranch and Nancy Noble Vickery of Boerne, along with nieces and nephews (Tom’s family): Ed and Molly Sharpe, Austin; Maribelle and Sam Hoerster, Mason; Susan and Joe Buchanan, Virginia Beach, Va.; Paul Henry, Liberty; and Cindy and Mike VanEtta, Liberty.
Her family wishes to thank the staff of Hospice Austin for their compassionate care, and the staff and her fellow residents of The Summit at Westlake Hills for their support and friendship.
A memorial service celebrating Martha Ann’s life is scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Athens, preceded by a private graveside burial.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First United Methodist Church, Box 911, Athens, TX 75751.
